I’ve found myself wanting to see a total count in smartboxes such as starred or reply later smartboxes, not just unread count. It would be great to have this as a setting per smartbox. 
I actually realized that it seems that the reply later smartbox is showing a total count rather than unread count since all of the emails in my reply later have been read. This isn’t happening in other smartboxes such as starred.
This is a good idea!
Currently if your Smartbox contains a “Reply Later” filter, the count will then include all messages marked as such. The problem is it’s not obvious at all 
. Perhaps a simple option is the way to go.
